Yves Saint Laurent Leopard Print

Leopard and animal print is a popular trend this Fall season that’s all over boutique and designer shelves. It’s one of those trends that’s stuck on the yearly repeat cycle, and I personally will never get sick of. However, I can be quite picky about the print..to me it all depends on who the created the print. One of my favorites this season is the Yves Saint Laurent new grey leopard print! I love everything pictured above: gorgeous Large Roady ($2995), iconic Platform Pumps ($880), French Wallet ($575), Zip Wallet ($595) and the Stole Scarf ($495)!

Yves Saint Laurent bowls me over with Vanity Bowler

To paraphrase a cheesy old pickup line, do you believe in love at first sight, or does the Yves Saint Laurent Vanity Bowler need to walk by again?

For me, the bag had to walk by a second time, but after a that I had no more doubts. The shape is unexpected, the color is a touch lighter than the military trend generally dictates and the bag looks just different enough to make it stand out without all of that needy attention-seeking that tends to come from accessory designers with less finesse than the fine folks at Yves Saint Laurent.

New Minimalism can be tough for women who actually need a functional everyday bag because it generally dictates smaller proportions and fewer pockets, but this bag demonstrates that stylish women don’t have to make such sacrifices if they don’t want to. The design has clean lines and minimal unnecessary adornment beyond the normal YSL clochette, but it also attaches some gusset pockets to do the unglamourous task of organizing your keys and cell phone. If you want to participate in several of fall’s trends without looking like a fashion victim, this bag is among your very best options.

Is this DVF bag terrible, or just insane enough to be fabulous?

I think I know how this one is going to turn out, but in the spirit of Friday, let’s have a poll!

The Diane Von Furstenberg Piper Sequined Shoulder Bag is a lot of look, in the immortal words of Tim Gunn. Sequins, feathers, multicolor metallic leather, studs, two straps…the design has a lot of competing visual ideas on a rather modestly sized bag, and my first reaction reflected that pretty accurately. But sometimes, stuff that seems totally awful is actually just weird enough to work, on the right girl. Standing out in a crowded contemporary handbag market takes some guts, which this bag has in spades, but I’m just not sure that the ends justify the means in this case in particular. What do you think? Vote and let us know in the comments.

Is this DVF bag crazy, or crazy like a fox?

The Yves Saint Laurent perfect combo

After our launch of TalkShoes, my love of looking at shoes is finally transferring to a love of wanting to wear these shoes. You see, I was always a bag girl, not a shoe girl. But now I am starting to grow my shoe collection and I am constantly drawn to over-the-top artistic shoes. Amanda covered the much talked about YSL Mohawk Pumps on TalkShoes already and from the fall collection there is a bag that compliments these pumps ideally.

The simplicity of the Yves Saint Laurent Chyc Large Patent Flap Shoulder Bag reminds me of the Celine Classic Box Bag, which you already know I love. Paired with the funky YSL Mohawk pumps, I think we have the perfect pair.

Would you buy a white Balenciaga bag?

When people think of Balenciaga they automatically think of the array of colors the house is known to produce. I can never keep up with our Balenciaga forum members, who are color geniuses by the way, discussing their favorite colors and leathers from the brand.

The color shown above is actually called Nacre and is part of the current season collection. I am quite picky about white bags, for obvious reasons. White attracts dirt from the moment it is removed from its packaging. On top of that, I prefer a clean/sleek design when opting for a white bag. Crisp and white go together like peanut butter and jelly in my vocabulary, which is why I prefer sophistication and elegance when it comes to a white handbag.

The Balenciaga color hunt is never ending, but I don’t think white is in the cards for me. Would you buy a white Balenciaga bag?

Anne Hathaway is lovely with Roger Vivier

Anne Hathaway graces the cover of the November issue of Vogue which hits newsstands October 26th. The young beauty looks absolutely glamorous. Of course the above shot caught my eye, as Anne embraces a Roger Vivier clutch. The Roger Vivier Clutch with a signature crystal buckle is the epitome of elegant evening wear. More via Vogue. What do you think of Anne’s look for Vogue?

Fashion Week Handbags: VBH Spring 2011

VBH handbags can be elusive little creatures. The brand has an extremely limited online presence, and when you combine that with limited in-store distribution in the US, it’s easy to become envious of the numerous starlets who get to sport the brand’s famous envelope clutches on the red carpet. Why should only starlets have unfettered access to such great evening bags?

The brand’s Spring 2011 collection goes far beyond those familiar clutches, however. The slouchy python and structure crocodile pieces are the star of this line by far, and although there are a few missteps (hello, gold bedazzled bucket bag), the beautiful and straightforward use of exotics makes up for the rather meager sins to be found. And are those python iPad cases that I spy? It sure looks like it.

Fashion Week Handbags: Chloe Spring 2011

Shocker of all shockers: Chloe’s Spring 2011 handbags embrace New Minimalism. I’ll give you a moment to recover.

With the exception of the duffel bag above, which also comes in a lovely shade of cement grey and will surely be embraced by celebrities and fashion people alike, the offerings from this collection are a bit underwhelming. Minimalism crosses the line to boredom very quickly in a few of these bags, but thankfully Chloe included two over-beaded evening bags to balance out the simplicity of some of the other styles. A brand really only needs one hit bag to make a collection a success, though, and it looks as though Chloe will definitely accomplish that goal for Spring 2011.

Fashion Week Handbags: Matthew Williamson for Bvlgari Spring 2011

British designer Matthew Williamson is best known for bright, modern prints, and ultraluxury brand Bvlgari is best known for very, very expensive things, so it follows logically that a handbag collaboration between the two would result in a somewhat more modern step for the old Italian label. Williamson brought his signature patterns to several bags for the Matthew Williamson for Bvlgari Spring 2011 handbag collection, but he also managed stay true to his aesthetic in a slightly more muted way with the use of metallic-finished embossed leather. This collection is strongest in its small bags and clutches, where a little dose of pattern or texture goes a long way.

Would you wear squirrel fur? What about Roberto Cavalli squirrel fur?

My personal feelings about fur notwithstanding, when I first saw the Roberto Cavalli Squirrel-Trimmed Brocade Shoulder Bag, it actually seemed like a rather judicious and attractive use of the material. And then I read the word “squirrel,” and it screwed up my entire perception of this bag’s reality.

Is it just me, or is there something positively Deliverence-esque about wearing squirrel fur? Are European squirrels more chic than their American counterparts, or are the animals just not regarded the same way in other countries? And if they are regarded the same way, why use a material that has such low-market connotations on a bag with a four-figure price tag?

The handbag itself is actually quite beautiful, when you don’t consider the fur or its source. The brocade embroidering is layered on top of what appears to be burnout velvet, and the details of the top flap and woven handle are intricate and extremely rich-looking. Cavalli managed to imbue his lush aesthetic into this bag without getting too far into tacky territory, and it would have been a textured, season-appropriate addition to many high-end winter wardrobes. And then, someone made the executive decision to cover it in squirrel, which apparently doesn’t confuse some people as much as it does me – the bag sold out soon after its Net-a-Porter debut. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $3650.

Rebecca Minkoff Python Fling

Women in Hollywood’ Tribute at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. For the occasion she’s wearing the Voom by Joy Han’s ruffle Sharon dress in eggplant (available at Revolve Clothing for $229) and carrying the snakeskin-embossed Fling clutch by Rebecca Minkoff (pre-order available in Tan-ish-gold Python at Bloomingdales for $275).

Michael Kors Spring 2011

As a barometer of the times, it would appear Michael Kors is sending a clear message with his spring show: we're not quite out of the woods yet. Set against a wall of green foliage designed by Raul Avila--his first-ever three-dimensional backdrop--the clothes were sensible, high-class and oozed approachable luxe appeal. The same could be said for his collection bags. Sharp and urban, they offered his Park Avenue clientele the perfect bag for window shopping on Madison Avenue, antiquing in Litchfield County or catching the rays on Coopers Beach. Whereas in past seasons the bags boasted a plethora of straps and buckles, it was almost as if Michael said "enough!" and wiped the slate clean. I absolutely adore the flat messenger bags in croc and leather that feature no adornment save for the simple ringlets attached to the strap. The style is decidedly French chic--something Michael would have shown on the Céline runway had he been designing there still--while the structured bags capture a favorite ladies-who-lunch shape.

Olivia Palermo's CC Skye Onie Messenger Bag

A front row staple, Olivia Palermo opted for the CC Skye Onie Messenger Bag ($595) when she attended the Peter Som show last week. The bag is a chic cross between Proenza's PS 1, Gucci's Horsebit Hobo, and Givenchy's Nightingale and at just $595, it's considerably more affordable than any of the three. It's made of black snake-embossed lambskin, has a long adjustable and detachable messenger strap, and a number of pockets. It looks a lot more luxe than the price tag suggests, so it's little wonder the bag is selling out fast , so hurry up if you like this style as much as I do!

Rachel Bilson in Miu Miu

While we all know Rachel Bilson's a die-hard Chanel fan, but it's nice to see that she's open to a little spice in her life. Spice, in this sense, comes in the form of Miu Miu's matelassé bag from the fall collection. She's chosen to wear it solely using the top handle (the strap is clearly removed from its ringlets) and it works beautifully with the ankle boots and pleated dress she has on. It's ladylike but done in a modern way thanks to the soft, ruched leather. With its roomy interior and easy access buckle closure, this Miu Miu is both fitting for weekend shopping trips as it is for school or work.

$1,795, available at Miu Miu boutiques

Blake Lively's See by Chloe Cherry Mini Bag

I'm loving the new Gossip Girl episodes set in Paris! Don't they just make you wish you could jet-set across the ocean for a few days - if only for La Duree! Responsibilities...such a pain... One thing you won't have to hop on a plane for is the See by Chloe Cherry Mini Bag  that Blake Lively sported on set. The bag pictured above sold out on Shopbop, but is still stocked at major department stores for $360; you can find the Foil version for $335 on Shopbop. The Cherry Mini bag is a super cute petite version of the label's previously released Grasshopper Large Crossbody Leather Bag and while leopard isn't for everyone, if you've got a quirky style, I'd say go for it, especially because it's way more convenient than a clutch if you're planning to wear it out at night.

What do you think about Blake's Mini? Better than the Grasshopper?

Marchesa Marble Beaded Clutch

Talk about eye candy! At her va-va-voom spring Marchesa presentation, Georgina Chapman showcased this mint hand-embroidered marble beaded clutch as part of her label's take on an Orientalist journey. Amazing right? While it'll certainly look at home complementing any of Marchesa's delicate creations, it'll do its part to add some extra oomph to jeans and a fitted boyfriend blazer. Love the mint beads set on a classic shape--my favorite color and silhouette--and how, although it was certainly painstakingly created, nevertheless remains on the inconspicuous side. Another day at Marchesa, another couture creation to covet.

$2,795, available at Neiman Marcus & Bergdorf Goodman

Lena Erziak "Morgan" in Ostrich

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the designers of Lena Erziak (Hasna, half of the sisterhood duo) in New York and not only is she gracious and beautiful but very passionate about her work. She visits all the farms the animals of her bags come from to make sure the conditions are humane. It is rare to find people who care that much. I instantly fell in love with the Morgan in ostrich (of course!), the quality of this bag is really quite amazing - the interior is lined in the non-quill portion of the ostrich. But when I found out the price, I literally was speechless. This good size bag in all ostrich and made in Italy is $1495. Now it makes me wonder what they're doing right and what others are doing wrong?

Sneak Peek: Net-a-Porter.com Bag Guide Video

Net-a-porter.com is launching a Bag Guide video tomorrow with the season's latest bags including Darla (Chloe), Alexis (Marc Jacobs), Alexa (Mulberry) and Alice (Halston Heritage). A 3D visual is so much more helpful than a flat photo when searching for a bag and all bags featured will only be a click away! The video was filmed with girls in a green maze looking gorgeous with their bags, and then stumbling upon a treasure trove of arm candy. Stuff of a bag snob's dreams! Make sure you tune in tomorrow to Net-a-porter.com for the video launch!

Roger Vivier Miss Viv Hobo

For a versatile hobo that's roomy, stylish and a step above the rest, look no further than Roger Vivier's covetable Miss Viv. It looks as great with a pantsuit as it does with a Boho look. I've always been a fan of soft, flexible shoulder straps so you can imagine my delight in seeing the slouchy chic vibe this burgundy suede hobo offers. I love that it's nice and simplistic on the outside--with just one outer pocket designated by a slimmed-down Vivier buckle--while inside it's just roomy for miles. At this price, it's clearly on the higher luxe spectrum, but it's destined to be a bag that ages in style--much like I would hope its wearer.

Hotel Snob: The Chatwal New York

Note: We usually do not write about hotels but hello, the leather wrapped closets at the Chatwal are inspired by Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunks!

We stayed at New York's newest and most fabulous five star hotel, The Chatwal New York, last week and fell in love with Master Architect Thierry Despont's restoration of the historical building at 130 W. 44th that was once home to America's first theatrical society, "The Lambs". Despont embraced the glamour of early 20th century travel and tradition of Empire Art Deco while making it thoroughly modern. The leather wrapped double closets in each room were inspired by Louis Vuitton steamer trunks (how fitting for the Bag Snobs!) and if not for the ultra high tech amenities (flat screen IP tv w/blueray dvd built inside the bathroom mirror!) and complimentary internet access (SO important for bloggers and business travelers alike) I would have thought I was in another era from the way the impeccably trained staff greeted us and took care of us throughout the stay.  We were asked to review the spa for Beauty Snob but I loved the property so much I felt it deserved a mention here as well! (jump for more)

Though magnificent, the hotel is not gaudy in anyway-- from lush suede walls to the mattresses and the custom made leather wrapped vanity where I blogged from-- the Chatwal is the ultimate in quiet luxury. I do not sleep well during Fashion Week but on the custom made organic 100% pure cotton mattress by Shifman Mattress commissioned by General Manager Joel Freyberg for Chatwal, I slept a solid 8 hours each night (I even missed a couple of early morning shows but shhh... don't tell!). These hand made mattresses are the stuff dreams are made of, an average mattress takes 45 minutes to produce but these took NINE HOURS each! The secret of The Chatwal bed lies in its inner spring mattresses, built with layers of natural cotton and environmentally friendly natural products, it is a fully organic mattress.  I'm obsessed with it and think The Chatwal should start selling them to their guests :)

I should also mention that each guests gets a bottle of Fiji water at turn down service, and the housekeeper will heat the floors in your bathroom (yes you read correctly, heated marble floors!) in addition to turning on your high tech Japanese heated commode!

You must visit this resplendent hotel if you are in New York. The Lambs Club, the restaurant at Chatwall has the most amazing grilled octopus (I ate it three days in a row) and apparently Woody Allen threw a party there one night during my stay (had I known I would have crashed it!).

The Chatwal also offers complimentary car service to its guests (first come first service and within 10 blocks of the hotel.) which proved to be very useful when we were running late to shows! Conveniently located in the heart of the theater district at 130. West 44th St (between 6th and 7th avenue), you can walk to all the shows and great restaurants in the area!

Nanette Lepore Leather Strap Tote

I love that Nanette Lepore now has a bag collection that goes with the philosophy of their ready to wear - spunky, girly and easy to wear. This textured leather cross body / tote is the perfect Frugal Snob choice for your everyday bag that can take you from work to weekends. Sure it's nothing earth shattering but for the girl who wants a slightly spirited bag that is functional and effortless, this has it all. Big enough to hold your entire life with a cross body option to allow you to keep moving. The hardware details, buckles and the textured leather are all done just right. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $495.

Burberry Patent Leather Crossbody Bag

It's been fun watching fashion shows live streamed to my MacBook but I have to say, NOT THE SAME. I tried to lie to myself that it was just as fun but it really isn't. There is nothing, NOTHING like the energy of a fashion show. One show I'm really bummed to have missed was the Burberry Prorsum show in London this morning (Christopher Bailey is amazing, a true talent). The collection was pure London Punk, studded trench coats and military style leather jackets-- but lightened up with neon bright bags.  Bags that you can order, right now, until September 28th.  Keeping in mind that they are Spring 2011 bags (are designers going overboard with instant gratification?!) but you'll have them by mid November.

I want to know what you think of the shop from the runway trend many designers are embracing.  Will you be pre-ordering now for next year?

Roger Vivier Miss Viv in Giraffe Print

OMG! This bag is a show stopper. I apologize for the poor quality image but I had to take pictures of it myself to show you. First of all, I am SOOO glad Roger Viver revised their logo, it is an immeasurable improvement on the Pilgrim buckle. It is a more effective use of negative space for impact and intrigue. It is so brilliant, why didn't they do it sooner?? But now that they're here, they are going to see some new fans. And not just on account of the logo, the entire new collection is amazing (Man Snob Jim and I are obviously on the same page). While everyone else is doing leopard, they differentiate themselves with giraffe ponyhair which is so much more polished and sophisticated. There are flaps are on both sides, the back has the embossed square instead. I love this bag so much but the price is a bit of a deterrent, it's small-ish and not all ponyhair so I'm raising an eyebrow at the $2925 price tag. Available at the Beverly Hills Neiman Marcus, 310-550-5900.

DVF Bonnie Foldover Tote in Gold Metallic

It's hard to find a stylish tote for $700 without resorting to the usual suspects (just look around and you'll know what I mean).  And yes, Diane von Furstenberg is known more for her wrap dresses than bags but you have to see the latest bag collection (sick!).  Top of my list is the Bonnie Foldover Tote in distressed metallic gold: an attention grabbing bag that will pull your outfit together in an instant.  The crackled leather is soft but will withstand more beating (it will look better with use actually!), the exterior pocket is within reach without sticking out like a sore thumb and it has lightweight yet sturdy flat shoulder straps (suspended on easy to open bar closures) that will stay on your shoulders even over heavy coats.  And the shape, it folds over and has another handle on the bottom to use as an oversized clutch!  I'm crazy about this bag!  I was with a friend at the DVF boutique on 14th and Washington last week and she snapped up the last one before I could whip out my wallet.  But a snob always gets what she wants, I'm ordering mine online, tax free.  Take that!

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2011 Bags

While Christopher Bailey's spring collection upped the wow factor when it came to details and second-skin pant options, his bags were noticeably shrunken--but still statement-making. They skimmed, grazed and gently caressed the body in an assortment of delicious colors--spearmint, beetroot, lime, opal and lipstick red--that left VIP front row guests, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexa Chung and Serena Williams, crooning for more. Whereas in past seasons there was an emphasis on the Burberry house check, for spring the brand's iconic symbol came stitched in a much more subtle manner. The "Sling" bag is Burberry's new bag du jour--and it comes available in a number of dizzying color and fabric combinations. Python! Patent! Bridle! Cross-body! Envelope clutch! You name it, Burberry's got you covered. While the simple patent leather bags have an almost Mod feel, what with their monotone colors and simple shapes, my favorite has to be the bridal patent clutch. Bridle straps are stitched onto the bag in a dizzyingly intricate manner while high shine brass hardware has been infused with a hint of gold. The leather's also been tanned, sealed and varnished to achieve that perfectly smooth surface texture. What's more, and perhaps it's due to the slightly less complicated construction of the bags, the prices are, dare I say, reasonable for its market.

$995 to $3,500

Gucci Spring 2011 Bags

While its clothing designs may have been rich in Moroccan excess, Frida Giannini's accessories only hinted at Marrakech. Tooled leather purses with braided straps were a mainstay of the collection, which focused heavily on clutches and "evening bags" (and not of the Judith Leiber kind)--at least for the runway. On occasion there would be a smattering of day bags, most of which were festooned with tassels and gorgeous, intricate stitching. I personally loved spring's new take on the "New Bamboo" top handle bag. But considering how chic and classic the fall collection bags were--and in particular the return to the vintage GG logo--I couldn't help but yearn for a little more this go around.

Sang A Rustic Alligator Rise Belted Pouch

Notice I did not call this a "fanny pack". Obviously, as you can see here, this is not your sightseeing tourist fanny pack, it is an incredibly chic alligator "clutch" on a self tie belt. Sang A is so creative and so far ahead of trends that sometimes people just don't get her. She does something and 2 years later it is the biggest thing. But here she has nailed it, the Rise belted pouch is jaw dropping. I need this, like, NOW!! It is 3 tiers of flaps that cover the zipper pouch. It is on a belt of the same rustic alligator which is tied loosely with the ends falling away like a sash. How freaking amazing is this?? I have a few Sang A bags and they are always show stoppers, this one will for sure turn heads as well. Available in Spring 2011 for $1995 (for alligator!!). To pre-order, email Joseph and make sure to tell him Bag Snob sent you. Shop current collection here.

Lanvin Draped GM Frame Bag

I love the new direction Lanvin bags are going. Alber Elbaz knows how to stay ahead of the game and when he realizes he needs to make a sharp left, he knows exactly what is around the corner. Gone are the sweet grosgrain ribbons, frills and ultra classic flaps and quilts. But not the ladylike chic. That is, after all, the life force of Lanvin. This slightly ruched frame has a little bit rugged vibe with the pebbled leather and puffy shape, but the basic frame and the delicate clasp keep it true to Lanvin's vision. There are 2 outer pockets with magnetic closures, this is what gives the bag the expanded girth. Gorgeous!! At Barneys New York for $2195.

Frugal Snob: Kooba Audrey and Billie

There are only a handful of brands who make snob worthy bags under $500 and Kooba is one of them. The bags are trendy, fun and never a huge commitment so you can get a new one each season without the usual guilt!  This fall, the Audrey bag in Berry with leather and suede is the must have from the brand.  Yummy color aside, the suede panel details add interest and lushness to the multi-pocket hobo-- a look that Kooba is known for.  Everything you see on the bag serves both form and function so don't expect unnecessary frills or thrills-- Kooba just makes good bags to use for our daily lives and who can fault the for that?! Kooba Audrey for $495 here.

Prada Spring 2011 Bags

Colorful, sporty and irreverent. That seems to be the call at Prada for spring. In a range of sizes from the large and practical (although done in crazy stripes and color combos) to the dainty and demure, the bags were a cheeky take on the age-old mentality of matching one's bags to one's shoes. Literally. I'm partial to the oversized top handle bags because they remind me of luggage pieces; they're also all based on existing Prada silhouettes that will be familiar to ardent shoppers. I'm quite intrigued by the interesting use of fabrics on these bags--not having touched them, some appear to be made of a hardened jersey-like material. The oversized leather buckles and locks also add a bit of whimsy to an otherwise serious and straightforward aesthetic.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2011

I'm all for unconventional pairings when it comes to clothing--but when it comes to bags, I'm all for it and then some! So you can imagine my delight in seeing that Tomas Maier fused Bottega Veneta's signature woven leather with some decidedly luxe skins for part of his spring bag collection. My favorite? The Cabat, natch, in particular the handsome grey version that pairs speckled woven leather with smooth, solid handles. It's already at the top of my spring wish list. The rest of the bags, for you ladies, don't disappoint either. The iconic knot clutches are back, this time redone in bulbous facades as if they'd been injected with fashion steroids. In general, the bags for spring are understated and whisper the same informal stance as their clothing counterparts. Cross-body bags, shoulder bags (dying over the honey-colored flat shoulder tote) and top-handled bags made of leather, canvas, and the aforementioned unconventional pairings of textures are fashioned in what Maier calls "imprecise shapes, finished with craftsmanship that has a naïve sensibility."

Versace Spring 2011

The idea of opposites seen with the bags on the Bottega Veneta runway was carried over to Versace, where purses and bags--in sizes small and medium only, thank you very much--were created from, you guessed it, contrasting materials. The dainty yet modern design of the bags are pretty appealing; I particularly love how the inlays and decorations are bright where the main material is dull, or dull where it is bright. For those who necessitate an over-the-shoulder bag, some are also designed with short straps that feature the Greek fret motif as decoration--and not as a logo, which the brand emphasized. But, because this is Versace, there is some added glitz courtesy of some metal mesh bags with Swarovski crystals that capture the play of light beautifully.

Celebrity Favorite: Cecelia Clutches

Exotic clutches from Cecelia ($525-$790) were some of the most popular during New York Fashion Week. Alexis Bledel, Zoe Saldana, Emmy Rossum, and Rachel Bilson were just some of the celebrities spotted in the brand's clutches. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, but my favorites are the ones done in matte white python, black python, and stingray (even if it's not considered to be all that luxe, I love the look and texture). The classic shapes, classic colors, and given the materials, the very affordable price points, make these clutches great buys! Plus some of the clutches can be worn multiple ways as with the Convertible Clutch Bilson is sporting above, which can be worn closed (like Bilson) or folded open and worn with a removable chain.

Tod's Spring 2011

First, some excellent news to share with Bag Snob followers: Derek Lam has renewed his contract with Tod's and will remain creative director for two more years! He's got a lot planned up his well rolled sleeves, so I eagerly anticipate more great news to come. Hooray!

Missoni Spring 2011

As if the collection, with its wacky Africa-meets-exotic-graduation theme didn't have eyes popping, check out the Missoni spring handbags: plastic wrap anyone? Maybe it's art imitating life, or vice versa, but it was intriguing, if not downright puzzling, to see the handbags come down the runway still in their plastic wrapping they arrived to the show venue in! For those who aren't familiar with the workings backstage at a fashion show, the accessories come housed in plastic bags so that the dressers can easily identify the bags and shoes that go with each look. I suppose, in a fit of irony, Angela Missoni decided to bypass one step and make the packing process one step easier following the show. The bags themselves are certainly charming and sweet. What do you think of this accessory statement?

Alexis Bledel in Amanda Pearl Sara Clutch

Amanda Pearl has been a celebrity favorite for awhile now (the brand's bags have even made appearances on Gossip Girl via the Blair Waldorf character). One of Amanda Pearl's most popular clutch styles seems to be the Roll Clutch, which has been spotted on everyone from Chloe Sevigny to Taryn Manning and now on Alexis Bledel who brought it along to the US Weekly party for the '25 Most Stylish New Yorkers,' which took place during Fashion Week at Lavo - one of my favorite new restaurants/nightclubs here in Manhattan and conveniently located 5 minutes from my apartment!

Bledel opted for a Navy Roll Clutch ($998) made of duchess satin and finished with a gem rock crystal cabochon closure. As a fun touch the bag, inspired by Pearl's best friend, includes a gold plated logo touch-up mirror with a cover. However as much as I love Stella McCartney, the Floral Silk Dress that Bledel is wearing is pretty un-stylish for a fashion-themed party if you ask me. At least the clutch ties into some of the flowers around the chest-area.

What do you think about Bledel's look?

Leighton Meester aka Blair in Louis Vuitton

Granted this isn't the best shot of Leighton Meester, but that bag! Gorgeous. Leighton Meester was photographed on Thursday on the set of Gossip Girl carrying a Louis Vuitton bag from Fall 2009. Unfortunately this bag was limited edition and is no longer available.

Of course the girls of GG get all the good stuff, it's no surprise that Blair gets to carry a special bag. With black leather and gold hardware and a gold Louis Vuitton logo in the corner, this bag literally screams out "Carry me!" to me. Personally I love gold, and although the Louis Vuitton monogram bags have been played out too much thanks to Snoop Dogg, this bag is gorgeous.

If we know anything about Blair, we know it's all about looking fabulous yet effortless. With her opaque black tights and grey jacket, we know Blair needs a gorgeous fall bag to match. Gossip Girl stylist Eric Daman provides our star with this Louis Vuitton bag to give a pop of gold through her accessories. I truly love this bag and it really is a shame it is no longer available.

Bulgari x Matthew Williamson Bag Launch Party

One of Milan Fashion Week's most highly-anticipated events took place Sunday night at the Bulgari Hotel, when Bulgari unveiled its Spring 2011 capsule collection of handbags designed by Matthew Williamson in a lush garden transformed into a kaledioscopic-fairy tale-jungle. "I wanted to create a particular kaleidoscope drawn from the rich Bulgari heritage in fine jewelry whilst also attaining a modern, contemporary feel," said Williamson.

Jil Sander Spring 2011 Bags

It wasn't just the proportions of his spring collection that Raf Simons played with at Jil Sander. The totes in the collection were, get this, based on ordinary, run-of-the-mill plastic grocery bags that, while we've certainly seen done over the years, seemed fresh and new under Simons' watch. At quick glance they look like plastic; a closer look reveals them actually be leather and vinyl. A novel idea, yes, but how practical can a shapeless--and transparent--sac be? We'll see come spring, as the company plans to produce these totes but will add a small leather strap to loop through the handles so that they can be worn as a shoulder bag. Would you invest in such a piece? Or is this a DIY project in the making?

Roberto Cavalli Diva Bag

Because no designer anniversary would truly be complete without the launch of an all-new handbag, Roberto Cavalli used the occasion of his 40th anniversary show over the weekend in Milan to mark the world debut of his new Diva bag. Available in seven different color/texture combinations, including canvas and python, brushed calfskin, China blue glossy calfskin, denim with natural leather trim and pony leather with jaguar or zebra print, the collection may be new, but certainly not a one-off; Cavalli, in fact, plans to evolve the offerings to complement his future ready-to-wear collections.

Balmain Black Leather Zipper Bag

Why hello Balmain, is this the best you could come up with?  I had such high expectations of your bags but you disappoint, season after season.  I mean exposed and opened zippers do spice up a basic black bag but it's been done done and done by so many designers that I'm tired just looking at it.  Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it.  I love the trendy punk rock thing as much as the next 80s kid but this looks like something from Forever 21 that should cost about $39.99, not THREE THOUSAND dollars.  Some of you will try and argue with me that Balmain is almost like couture (key word is ALMOST) but I'm not buying it.  If you do, you're not fit to carry your wallet and should let me be the trustee of it.

How to Spot a Fake Hermes Birkin

AccessHollywood recently published an “On-Air” short clip of a few pointers to help with Birkin authenticity. It’s a great watch for those of you who are in the market for a Hermes Birkin, and rather than head to the Hermes boutique, going the other route such as eBay or Portero Luxury.

In the 1:42, fashion expert Michael Tonello briefly talks about how it’s all in the details. Like the Hermes logo stamp font, which Hermes owns the rights to, and every couple years change something about the design to throw off counterfeiters. Also other little dead giveaways, such as the stitch, interior lining and even the sleeping bags.

It’s all in the details.

Check out the clip above!

Rebecca Minkoff Kiss Bag

Rebecca Minkoff has been expanding her horizons lately. Lots of new styles and lots of new colors! But a bag that has caught my attention lately is one that has been out for a little while now (it is still fairly new though). It’s the Rebecca Minkoff Kiss Evening Bag! This cute bag is small, but it is a bit larger than the older Fling Clutch. I know some people like dainty little evening bags, but I have to be able to fit more than some keys and a credit card in there! So this little beauty would make a great alternative!

The Rebecca Minkoff Kiss Evening Bag is unique in its vintage-ish shape, complete with framed top and kiss lock closure. I love the long, leather-infused chain strap. And the quilting, although not unique to this style, is just darling. Plus I can’t get over how the stud accents are actually Phillips-head screws! Those are certainly unexpected and they give this bag just the right amount of edge. Take in to consideration the detachable tassel and you have yourself the perfect bag for a night out on the town! Complete the look by pairing it with a dress that is anything but girlie-girl and some killer heels! Wow! Those boys had better look out!

Lulu Guinness Snakeskin Lips Clutch

Do you remember back when black lipstick was the shade to have? So late year, I know. (side note: from the Spring 2011 runway, orange is the new bold shade!) That trend is long over with and unless you’re still rocking the goth -inspired look, it should be tossed out or tucked far-far away. Save it for Halloween. That is not the case however with Lucinda “Lulu” Jane Guinness’ fabulous pucker up clutch. In my opinion, much more wearable than the expired ink-lip trend.

If you’re not a fan of the juicy noir, there’s a variety of other shades and materials to choose from: silver, red, black and even a union jack print in snakeskin or Swarovoski. My favorite from the wide assortment – the black snakeskin!

Cole Haan Heritage Bag

There’s no denying that another major color this season is grey. In all it’s shades, it’s a wonderful neutral that goes with so many colors that it is perfect for your everyday handbag.

Saks and Cole Haan have collaborated this season to bring you an amazing bag in this versatile color. The Heritage Weave Jade Shoulder Bag is definitely a bag that you should consider if you are in the market for a fabulous grey bag!

Cole Haan is a brand that has offered quality footwear year after year. In recent history, they have produced beautiful outerwear and their handbag selections have only become more exciting each year. The Heritage bag is a wonderful example of classic styling with details that keep it interesting without being too trendy.

The clasic doctor bag shape is softly rounded and styled with all over woven leather. I am definitely a sucker for a great weave! In addition to the leather double-handles, the bag also has a removable shoulder strap. A handy flat pocket on the end of each bag provides an excellent spot for your cell phone, ID or car keys.

Cole Haan has accented this bag beautifully with simple silver hardware. An top zipper opens to reveal a roomy interior, two inside open pockets and one zippered pocket. The overall size is 11″ x 9″ x 6″. While the grey is exclusively offered at Saks, it is also available in Woodbury, a cognac color. Personally, I prefer the grey! The best part – it’s easy on your budget this season … only $398!

Mulberry Leopard Alexa Bag

As you may have already heard, animal prints are in again for Fall 2010. I pointed out in an earlier post (Wild About Animal Prints) that the trend seemed to be leaning more toward gray tones, rather than brown tones. And you know what? I think things are still going in that direction! But with all of these animal prints floating around out there, you would think that I would be getting a little sick of looking (and writing) about them. Well, actually, no. At least not when it comes to an unbelievably gorgeous bag like the one you see pictured here! Yep, Mulberry has jumped on the animal print bandwagon with their Patent Leopard Alexa Bag!

A celebrity favorite, the Mulberry Alexa Bag was named after British style icon Alexa Chung. The bag is a cross between the iconic Bayswater Tote and men’s briefcase, the perfect combination of formal and casual. The bag can be worn either as a crossbody (à la Katie Holmes) or a satchel, making it a versatile piece for everyday wear. I love Mulberry’s signature “postman’s” lock closure and braided top handle. The bag is gorgeous in its traditional buffalo leather. But, wow, this new patent leopard version has literally taken my breath away. I love the tone-on-tone leopard pattern on the patent leather background. Normally, I’m not too wild about patent leather. But Mulberry pulled the look off so well, almost effortlessly so. What I like most though is how this bag is dressy enough for night, but low-key enough for day. If you’re looking to get an animal print bag this season, I would definitely recommend this lovely piece!

Lockheart Shelby Satchel

It seems to me that Lockheart has created a bit of a sore spot here at Bag Bliss. First, Deysa wrote about the over-the-top braiding on the Lockheart Cadence. And now, I am bringing everyone’s attention to the .

Now I’m not saying that I hate this bag. In fact, there are quite a few things that I have found myself admiring about it. I just love the domed satchel shape. It is unmistakably classic, yet unique at the same time. The front flap pockets are so cute, as are the double handles with their buckle detail. The main compartment opens up super wide, making it easy to look inside and examine contents. And did I mention that this bag is made of lambskin leather? Mmmm, yummy! And then… there’s the pleats. Normally, I am crazy for pleats. I think they look absolutely gorgeous on handbags, softening silhouettes and giving interest to otherwise plain designs. So what’s the problem with the pleats on this particular style? Not to sound too harsh, but they sort of remind me of the lining of a coffin. Perhaps it is because they were created so neatly and precisely. I guess when I think of pleats, I don’t think of formal patterns and hard edges. However, I think it is great that Lockheart is trying to think outside of the box. The use of pleats here is actually quite creative and I have to give them credit for that. This bag would be perfect for someone who really likes bold patterns and it would make a great alternative to a geometric print.

Find the at Muse Ten, where it is currently available in Mulberry (shown) or Black.

Coach Studded Kristin Bag

Coach has had a lot of new styles lately. I mean, A LOT! And it seems like a little bit of everything has sprouted up in these most recent additions. The good, the bad… and (yikes!) the ugly. But you know what? I still like Coach and I admire them for their bravery in exploring new things. So I’m not going to focus on the bad stuff, or the ugly stuff for that matter. Nope, I am only going to focus on the good. And that is exactly what I have here! Meet the Coach Kristin Studded Bag!

This lovely piece is the bad girl of the Coach world and it is a stark contrast to the more conservative, original Kristin Pleated Satchel. It has that same great, rounded satchel shape and sophisticated pleats that add all-around softness. But Coach decided to add a touch of toughness to this classic style. Just check out those studs! A mixture of domed and flattened pyramid studs seem to rain down from the top of the bag. Not only do I love the combination of shapes, but I love the varying shades of silver and gunmetal as well. Plus the crackled metallic leather gives this bag just the right amount of sheen. Overall, this bag has managed to balance the tough with the luxe quite nicely. I think it would make a great bag for the fall/winter season, easily fitting in with the hottest of the current trends. But this bag has a degree of practicality to it as well. It is certainly large enough for use as an everyday bag and the optional shoulder strap only further facilitates this. And if you wondering what kind of shoes to wear with this bag, I definitely recommend pairing it with a pair of over-the-knee boots!

Check out the Coach Kristin Studded Bag at Nordstrom! It is a limited edition style and it is currently available in Black (shown) or Boysenberry!

Fashion Week Handbags: Gucci Spring 2011

If Gucci‘s accessories designers have anything to say about it, the trend toward handbag minimalism is over, starting with Gucci Spring 2011.

Considering last season’s retro-leaning accessories collection and the current trend climate, I expected another line of referential, staid handbags from the Italian brand during its recent presentation in Milan; I was dead wrong. Not only were the clothes bright, bold and more than a tad tropical, but the bags were sexy statement-makers in exotics, metallics and intricate woven leather. Naturally, my favorites were the big carry-all satchels like the one at left.

Look for Less: Mulberry Lily

After one week in NYC I have learned one major thing when it comes to my handbags: cross-body straps are majorly helpful. As much as it is easy to order everything to arrive at your apartment door, I am walking to and fro and picking up things to bring home. That means my two hands are important assets when carrying bags from Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond back to our place. Cross-body straps is where it is at. And on top of loving a cross-body strap, it is important that the bag I am carrying is not overly cumbersome and heavy. That is precisely why I love the Mulberry Lily. It is both compact and has a cross-body strap. It is also super cute.

If you love the look of the Mulberry Lily but don’t like the price tag, I found a look for less. In fact, this is very very very close to the Mulberry bag (as are many of the design aesthetics I have seen from the brand Ash). The Ash Camy Cross Body Bag and the Mulberry Lily are twins, more identical than fraternal at that.

Fashion Week Handbags: Prada Spring 2011

It’s always disappointing when the handbags are the least impressive part of any collection, but with a line as inventive and exciting as Prada Spring 2011, I guess something had to get the short shrift. The collection’s shoes (which you can check out over at TalkShoes) were the best of the season thus far, but the handbags left a bit to be desired for luxury lovers.

In keeping with the trends we’ve seen in Milan so far, Prada went for bright colors and multihued designs. Most of the stripes came on a canvas background, and I’ll be interested to see if any of those bags are translated to leather for retail. In fact, if the bags had been made of leather from the outset instead of featuring so much canvas, my take on the collection would be lightyears more positive – I just can’t get excited for high-priced cotton, even though I think the aesthetic ideas are strong and interesting.

Fashion Week Handbags: Bottega Veneta Spring 2011

While the entirety of Italian fashion is busy making itself over in technicolor, leave it to Tomas Maier and Bottega Veneta to step back for a moment to remind us all of the not-insignificant charms of a functional, neutral, well-made luxury bag. That description might seem like it would portend a collection of boredom, but quite the contrary – Bottega Veneta Spring 2011 speaks softly, but carries a big stick.

With these designs, Maier sends a clear message – a bag doesn’t have to have a gimmick to be great. Texture and ease abounds in this collection, and that translates into exotics, frayed edges and a host of variations on Bottega’s traditional intrecciato theme. The results are functional and beautiful, and there’s not a fad in sight.

Fashion Week Handbags: Marc Jacobs Spring 2011

It took us a few days (my guess would be that lighting issues delayed the release of the show photographs), but we rustled up a few pictures of the handbags from Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 for your viewing pleasure. And a pleasure they are – those who prefer seriousness to fun in their accessories need not apply.

These bags only make up part of what is always an enormous accessories collection, but it seems as though Jacobs is right on board with the multicolor trend that has emerged quickly in Europe, as well as the continuing trend for smaller, more streamlined and structured bags. This is perhaps the most wearable collection of runway bags Jacobs has presented in a few seasons, and they’ll almost certainly do well at retail.

Fashion Week Handbags: Marni Spring 2011

Although Marni doesn’t enjoy a preeminent spot among fashion’s most powerful bag designers like some of the its Italian counterparts, you have to give the brand credit – Marni sticks to its quirky retro-modern aesthetic with a slavishness that has won it scads of fans who aren’t afraid of a bit of a fashion risk.

I’ve never been absolutely bowled over by a Marni handbag, but but they’re consistently unique and well-made, which goes a long way in a crowded accessories marketplace. Marni Spring 2011‘s bags may be the line that forces me to turn the corner, so to speak. The bags are streamlined, made of outstanding materials, and just weird enough to be wonderful. This line has a very specific customer base, and I think I’m finally part of it.

Valentino distracts us from Fashion Week with crystal-encrusted birds

Valentino’s handbags are notorious for their use of literal flora – flowers and leaves of every variety have dotted the brand’s bags for several years running, to the near-exclusion of any other aesthetic ideas. The motif works for Valentino, and the brand has carved itself a significant, ladylike niche in a very competitive handbag market.

What Valentino has never used on a bag before, at least to my knowledge, is literal fauna, which is what we have with the Valentino Bird Clutch. A rather run-of-the-mill silk evening bag is topped by perching crystal birds; if this is the direction of Valentino’s evening accessories, then the brand might just end up giving Judith Leiber a run for its bird-bag money.

With Valentino’s penchant for fine details and intricacy, the brand seems like the perfect place to look for ultraluxe clutches. But yet, it’s not – Valentino’s nighttime options tend to be streamlined and structured instead of glitzy and complicated. That’s not a bad thing, but the utterly fabulous bird closure atop this relatively boring bag shows us that the company is capable of much more. I hope we get to see it eventually. Buy through Colette for $2963

Fashion Week Handbags: Burberry Prorsum

The bags of Burbery Fall 2010 are kind of a shame when you consider the brilliant collection from whence they came. Not only are they plain and boring, but they weren’t even close to being the most interesting leather pieces in the show – that honor went to the many heavily-detailed leather jackets and vests that graced the runway.

For all the intricate leather work that clearly went into the jackets, the handbags were shown none of the same attention by Christopher Bailey & Co. In fact, they were arguably the lowest point of a line I really, truly loved in almost every way. I don’t mind purses being used as bright, poppy accents to a larger look, but designers should at least take the time to make the bags special as well. The latticed python seen on a few pieces was an interesting-enough technique, but the simplistic shapes don’t do anything to help the cause. Full pictures, after the jump.

Fashion Week Handbags: Michael Kors embraces new minimalism, runway shopping for Spring 2011

This was just going to be your average runway review of the handbags from Michael Kors Spring 2011, but then I noticed something interesting – one of Kors’ runway bags is already available for pre-order on Saks.com. Much has been made of designers offering their runway wares for order via their own channels following presentations, but as far as I can remember, this is the quickest I have seen a brand go from runway to mass retailer with relatively little fanfare – it’s enough to make you wonder if this is the new normal.

As for the collection, much of it was classic Kors, although the offerings ranged from small-scale and ladylike to large-scale (and I do mean large and beach-appropriate. All of the designs gave a nod to fashion’s newly streamlined accessories shapes, and many of the bags could be used by men and women alike. As promised, what appears to be a smaller version of the collection’s Santorini Raffia Totes are now available for pre-order via Saks for $495 with delivery expected by the end of the year.

Fashion Week Handbags: Fendi Spring 2011

Can I get a standing ovation for Fendi? It wasn’t all that many seasons ago that the brand’s accessories department seemed to be in a bit of a post-Spy Bag aesthetic flux. There were too many logos, too many underdeveloped ideas and too little editing. From the looks of it, the brand has come out of its slump in fine form with Fendi Spring 2011, the brand’s third brilliant major accessories collection in a row. Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence but three times is a trend – get on the Fendi bus.

For spring, Fendi’s runway accessories are all about incorporating color in a classic way. No bag was graced with fewer than two different shades, and almost all of them incorporated the various colors on leathers of different textures. What would have been an unwieldy combination of elements in most designer’s hands was deftly developed by Fendi’s accessories designers, and the shapes were kept clean and traditional in order to offset the bold materials. There is not a bag in this collection that I wouldn’t be proud to add to my closet, and multicolored accessories encourage an inventive, modern way of dressing that more and more women are embracing.
