Handbag Stories: my bag sighting of the week.

The cross body style trend is so huge for summer, but there is a con to this style that you need to be aware of.

Earlier this week I witnessed one of the biggest wardrobe malfunction bloopers that could happen. True story..

Imagine this: If you’re familiar with Downtown Seattle then you’re going to know exactly where I’m talking about. I was sitting in my car in downtown, on a somewhat busy 4-way street around lunch hour, inbetween Nordstrom and Barney’s. The light just turned red and the crosswalk signs lit up. I came to a stop, front of the line, and the sheep herd crowd stepped onto the crosswalk. I was front of the line at this point, just sitting there listening to my music as I waited for the light to turn green. When all of a sudden, a girl walked right in front of me with her dress bunched-up, revealing her bottom. Just like in that Tampax commercial! Only from what I could tell in that 10 seconds she was in my sight, nobody said anything.

The culprit: her bag! The length of her bag was so long that the body of her bag rested on her hip, causing it to bunch up. Which should serve as in important caution about cross body bags and if you’re wearing a skirt – the bag doesn’t need to reach down to your bum.

Bonnie Foldover Tote in Gold Metallic

This is my favorite DvF bag ever! It has a bit of YSL in its DNA, the shape and that bar at the top remind me of the Marjorelle which I have and still love and use. But this is flatter and does not have a rigid frame which makes it so much easier to use. And lighter, too. It's the subtle details like that little tab in the middle that makes this so simple yet chic. The metallic is what will make you buy it emotionally but luckily the shape and style are classic and will serve you well for many seasons. At Diane von Furstenberg for $700.

Bottega Veneta Knot Marcapunto Stitched Clutch

The Knot clutch gets a cute twist in the updated Marcapunto stitched style but why not go all the way and cover the entire clutch?  The flat leather center looks odd, as if one is supposed to monogram it.  Which may not be a bad idea (I'm obsessed with monogramming and wish I could monogram everything, it's a sickness-- sorry).  I mean, BV's philosophy is "The only initials you need are your own" right?  But then it would have to be hand stitched in the same manner or it'll look tacky and cheap.  On second thought, let's just leave the clutch the way it's meant to be, understated and elegant (I'll get my monogram fix with my new towels).

Olivia Palermo in Mulberry Neely

Mulberry did it again! They've come-out with another gorgeous celeb-favored bag, The Neely. Part of their Fall 2010 collection, the bag is named after the lead character in Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls," Neely O'Hara, and it comes in a variety of colors and fabrics. It has a similar briefcase-like quality as the Alexa did, which might help explain some of its instant appeal. Here Olivia is carrying the Nude in Spongy Patent Leather, which retails for $995. She looks gorgeous - as always! Michelle Trachtenberg, Miley Cyrus, and Blake Lively are just some of the other celebs who have been spotted in this Mulberry bag recently.

Certainly predict seeing this one all around Lincoln Center come Fashion Week. What do you think about Mulberry's latest "it" bag?

Smythson Launches Men's Collection

One of the best things to happen this year in the world of leathergoods is without a doubt the arrival of a first Smythson men's collection. I recently previewed the entire collection and it not only left me very impressed, but rethinking my need for that next Louis Vuitton or Hermès leathergoods item--be it a briefcase or simple wallet.

One of my favorite accessories is the Savile Gray Slim Coat Wallet. Not only is it reasonably priced at $380, but the collection, with its strong business focus, comes in smooth calf leather in colors like black, bitter chocolate and gray. I also found the silver and Nile Blue--the latter being the Smythson signature hue--dot logo detail on all small leather goods and Nile blue silk grosgrain linings superbly chic and masculine yet understated. The Savile range of products include wallets, writing folders, briefcases and travel accessories.

Marc Jacobs Paradise Rio Bowler

Great new bag from Marc Jacobs. It's not terribly exciting but for the girl who buys the one Marc Jacobs every couple of years, this is a staple that is also current. Those links at the base of the straps are what caught my eye, it's chunky but not overdone for the right amount of emphasis. The side zippers aren't functional but the slit does allow for external pockets. He built his base on suburbanites looking for a functional bag with some name recognition and I respect that he recognizes that. Not that I'm diminishing this bag in any way but like I said, this isn't a runway look but in a good way. At Barneys New York for $995.

Kate Hudson in Louis Vuitton Monogram Antheia Hobo

Above Kate Hudson is sporting the Louis Vuitton Monogram Antheia Hobo GM ($2,970), a bag that has also been spotted on Sienna Miller and Rachel Bilson. I'm not such a fan of this style and it strikes me as an uninspired version of the classic Gucci Large Horsebit Hobo. The colors this LV comes in - Olive and Fumee (smoky gray) - are also on the drab side and I can't stand the monogram - even if it's on lush lambskin! The only redeeming part of the monogram is that it's embroidered with tonal versus contrasting thread. I also like the look and convenience of the long key holder.

What do you think about Kate's LV Hobo? Snob or Slob?

Chanel Fall 2010 Cocoon Bags

Now that Chanel has permanently added the Cocoon collection to its lineup of bags, they're finally experimenting with some unique fabrications and color combinations for fall. First up is this STUNNING Coco Cocoon bowling bag: it's based on the premise of the classic bowler's shape but fashioned in waxed soft alligator with leather trim and white metal accents. Yes, it's beyond expensive ($52,260) but oh-so worth it if you have the funds. The second bag I love from the fall collection is the Coco Cocoon handbag in a petrol blue orylag fur with lambskin and white metal accents ($7,295). It's clearly more fashion-forward than the first bag I highlighted, but I love it for its unique combination and color. Both bags have plenty of room for everything, but what I love most are their big, thick handles that give the bags a casual feel to them--perfect for weekends or as, dare I say, the ultimate gym bag.

Miu Miu Patent-Leather Turn-Lock Bag

The people at Miu Miu don't care about weight. Between the patent leather and the mega turnlock hardware, this bag is quite hefty. But super fab! This is yet another reason to hit the gym, once you have worked up the strength to carry any bag you want, you won't have to care about my whining of how heavy bags are anymore. You really do limit your selection if you require feather weight. This has the rare distinction of looking good with the top handle or shoulder strap, which is adjustable to go cross body. The lilac is gorgeous, it's warm but has a blend of steely gray for Fall wear. The interior is a happy purple - a very nice touch. At Net-a-Porter

Eva Mendes in Dior Libertine Bag

Never one to be without a versatile tote, Eva Mendes' favorite hold-all of the moment appears to be Dior's new Libertine bag. Fashioned in soft lambskin, I love the petal pink color--it's perfect for Eva's feminine aesthetic. And speaking of versatile, Eva illustrates it perfectly via a dressed up look thanks to a floral-print Oscar de la Renta dress but also dressed down with a flirty number from Madewell while out and about. The bag's solid soft leather handle rests comfortably on the shoulder while the hardware ensures it'll safely carry everything the capacious tote is meant to handle. And rather than just slap on a solid piece of leather on the side, the gentle ruching of the lambskin adds a further flirty touch to an otherwise utilitarian day bag. Petal pink not your thing? It's also available in black, natural, chocolate brown, amarante, noisette, fox fur and mongolian fur (prices will vary).

Available at Dior boutiques and Saks Fifth Avenue for $2300.

Maison Martin Margiela Line 11

When would you use this clutch? At the Itidorad after party? It looks like a pillow or hand warmer. Which this seemingly could be used for as well. This just isn't a fashion piece even if you wanted to be out there and edgy. It looks like it's meant to hold toiletry or something more personal that stays at home. To do a clutch in shearling just makes no sense. As much as I am against using fur on a bag, in this case I definitely prefer it to this. And the final insult? $1115!! At Barneys New York.
