Diane von Furstenberg Grace Zebra Print Leather Bag

More animal print fabulousness from DVF, this time in the form of zebra print on pebble grained leather.  I can't decide what I prefer, leopard or zebra, what about you?  Leopard is more in your face and zebra feels slightly more subtle, especially in black/gray tones.  I love a gray bag with gold accents, the contrast of cool and warm tones really make the bag stand out.  And if you touch this bag, it feels like shagreen (without the cost or weight).  This is actually a perfect work bag and will bring your daily office wardrobe a bit of glam.  The center zipped compartment will keep your wallet safe and the outer two will fit your iPad/Macbook/Kindle perfectly.  There are even two outer pockets on each end of the bag for your iPhone/Blackberry.  An all around "Snob" bag if you ask me!
for $625

Nancy Gonzalez Crocodile Satchel

Having always been a big fan of Nancy Gonzalez's elegant designs, it's nice to see that her hit exotic skin bags are being given new life thanks to a modern update: dimension. The ruching of the prism brown Caiman fuscus crocodile coupled with the architectural silhouette and tonal topstitching make for a tote that's of the current times that any woman would be happy to sport. Gone are the days when these bags, with their framed tops, were for your grandmother; sleek touches like the pleated body detail and simple conveniences such as the magnetic snap top, suede lining and messenger bag style strap, not to mention dual inner compartments with center zip ensure that this bag will serve its purpose--and at this price, justifiably so. Available at Neiman Marcus and Neiman Marcus online for $3600.

Miss Gustto 'Punk Rebel Bonnie' Faux Leather Bag

Gustto has a new lower priced line now call Miss Gustto. It has the same teenage-girl-with-an-attitude aesthetic at prices that actual teenage girls with attitudes can afford. Gustto is already a moderately priced line so this diffusion line offers real accessiblity to designer bags for girls who want fashion forward bags but must otherwise resort to knockoffs and Forever 21 (not that there is anything wrong with Forever 21, I love them!). I wish they were leather but I am asking a lot for this price point. This Punk Rebel Bonnie is sassy and trendy - it has all the trappings of current looks - the chain swag, slouchy shape, zipper detail and cross body wear (comes with a detachable shoulder strap). At Nordstrom for $98.

Thomas Wylde Studded Leather Shoulder Bag

So, I guess we're not done with studs just yet. But this one is different in that it is subtle and very feminine. I love the textured whisper gray, such an amazing color for fall (for everything not just bags!) and that line of varied size studs down the center looks like it is supposed to be there instead of just being slapped on at the last minute because studs are in. The signature Thomas Wylde skulls danging down also work seamlessly in with the overall design. The shape is totally utilitarian making this less specific (as in, only when you are in rocker garb) and more everyday. Flirty dress, sweater and jeans, business setting and wild night out - it's that versatile. At Net-a-Porter

Chanel Double Flap Top Handle/Shoulder Strap Bag

How adorable is this Chanel bag? It's very rare that I like a classic quilted Chanel bag beyond the timeless 2.55--so you can imagine my delight when I spied this jewel in the Chanel preview. It reminds me of that trend back in the late Nineties when women, particularly in Washington D.C. for some reason, would buy a smaller 2.55 and piggy back it on top of a larger quilted tote (I distinctly remember seeing this in an old issue of Harper's Bazaar). Anyhow, this bag is like the best of both worlds! The double flap top on either side guarantees this bag is roomy while the center top handle AND reinforced chain shoulder strap ensure options, options, options! I love it in this red! And let's face it: the price is reasonable for Chanel. Simply put, it's a lot of bag for the money. $3,325, available at Neiman Marcus.

Balenciaga Travel Bag

I think I may have found my fall indulgence. I was shopping at Balenciaga the other day and stumbled upon this brand new travel bag that had just arrived in stores. It caught my eye because not only do I love Balenciaga's metal grommets, but I have a particular affinity for rectangular-shaped luggage (can't explain it, I'm weird). This bag reminds me of a modern take on old-school, classic luggage from decades past: it's utilitarian to a T, offers the versatility of both a long strap as well as double handheld handles and is finished in the most gorgeous combination of brown leather and tan suede. It's clearly roomy enough to fit a long weekend's worth of clothing and accessories (and then some), and I appreciate the soft-sided nature of the bag--although I secretly prefer a more structured aesthetic for day bags.

$2,595, available at Balenciaga NYC 212-206-0872

Tod's Soft Miky Sacca Hobo

Owning a great Tod's bag is like comfort food for the bag snobs. It always makes us feel better no matter our mood!  The Miky Sacca hobo bag does not look like much in photos but we carried it during the preview in Milan and trust me, it's super cute on the shoulder not to mention so soft and cuddly.  It is an updated rendition of Tod's uber popular "Miky" collection (I have a fab white one from 1999), love how Derek went to the archives and came up with his own version instead of just using it in a new color.  If you need a great daily knock around go anywhere bag, this is it my snobby friends!

Sara Berman Decca Midi Studded Slouch Bag

I stumbled across the most beautiful bag today. It is such a lovely piece, I just had to share it with all of you. And here it is! Introducing the ! Yes, yes… I know. When the heck did Sara Berman add handbags to her collection? Well, it turns out her handbags made their debut for the Spring/Summer 2010 Collection. So this was a very recent development! And boy, what a development it was!

I am simply in love with this bag! I like the puffy hobo shape and how the shoulder strap is one continuous piece with the body of the bag. It is sort of like a sling style, but without that deflated look. Plus the pleats at each side add some extra softness to the look. This softness was then paired with some hard-edged details — distressed leather and studs. And when I say studs, I really mean studs! An array of gold tone studs both large and small, polished and brushed, flat and domed to be exact! These studs can be found adorning the edges of the shoulder strap and the bottom of the bag. But wait… isn’t a stud encrusted bottom a little Alexander Wang-ish? Perhaps. But I think in this case, the studs are different enough that there won’t be too many cases of mistaken identity. Sara Berman really pulled this look off well!

Halston Heritage Alice Clutch

New pieces from Halston’s diffusion line have hit the virtual shelves at Net-A-Porter for Fall 2010! I simply love Halston Heritage! It is through this line that the company has been reinventing some of their archive pieces and then marketing them at a price point any of us bagistas can afford. And whether it is clothing or handbags, no other designer screams glamor like Halston does! I’m just glad that looking glamorous doesn’t mean you have to break the bank anymore. So which Halston Heritage bag am I currently lusting after? This lovely Alice Clutch you see pictured here, of course!

This gorgeous clutch is available in several different versions. However, I am really liking this stingray effect leather one! I also love the origami-like pleating, it makes this clutch look so rich and elegant. Plus orange is my favorite color for Fall and it is a great way to update your look for this coming season. And judging from the modeling picture, this is one roomy clutch as well. Just look how wide it opens up! Wow, this lovely piece sounds like quite the catch! And with a price tag that you have to see to believe, this clutch will deliver a lot of bang for your buck!

Thomas Wylde Bags at Net-a-Porter

New Thomas Wylde additions hit Net-a-Porter! Check them out and tell me what you think. Which bag is your favorite? Or would you just die to have them all?

I’ve always had an obsession with Thomas Wylde. I’ve always been in love with designer Paula Thomas leather handbags and accessories for as long as I can remember. Also I’m not sure if you remember but a couple years ago we gave away the Thomas Wylde Mustang bag in red. Oh my gosh, that was the hardest bag to let go for a giveaway, ever. The leather is so squishy and soft – once you get one of her bags in your hands, you’ll see that I’m talking about. Also come to think of it, my current favorite evening out-on-the-town clutch is my crystal Zanzibar. So fabulous. Can’t wait to add another one of her bags to my collection.

J.J. Winters Fringle Bag

When you think of J.J. Winters, what is the first thing that comes to mind? If you answered fringe, then give yourself a pat on the back! Yep, nothing screams J.J. Winters like the word “fringe”. The designer is also well known for her use of suede, which always looks so lovely with fringe. But it looks like J.J. Winters has been experimenting a little bit. Here we have a bag that is composed of distressed, vintage-looking leather. Don’t worry though, the designer kept the fringe! Meet the !

This is such a cute little bag! The use of fringe was very creative here. I like the way it fans out from the center of the bag, almost like a super long mustache! Haha! I love the braided shoulder strap and the dog leash clasp closure. Plus it looks like Ms Winters was experimenting with something else — studs! Both silver and gold studs adorn this bag, giving it a fresh and updated look (we all know how popular studs are right now). This bag would work best as a crossbody bag, thanks to its optional long strap. Perfect for those days when you don’t need to carry a lot of stuff around with you.

ChloĆ©’s latest bag is red all over

It’s been a little while since I found a ChloĆ© bag that struck me as both aesthetically pleasing and supremely functional. Usually the brand’s bags embody one virtue or the other, and finding them in the same bag makes me want to whip out my American Express and head directly to Neiman Marcus. For the sake of my job, I’ll try to finish my post before that happens.

Obviously the bag’s color and leather look divine (and the grey version is no different), but functionality concerns me most when I’m thinking about spending money. Luckily, this design doesn’t disappoint in the pragmatic arena either. Nothing in the bag’s structure would get in the way of using it for practical, everyday tasks, no matter whether you prefer to carry your purse on your shoulder or in the crook of your arm. It would look equally lovely in both locations and hold everything that a casual luxury bag needs to hold for a jaunt to the mall or even everyday office duty. And for ChloĆ©, the price isn’t exactly terrible. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $1565.

I love that red. It’s not too orange. This is why I only have one red bag because most of them end up looking a little orange-y.
My biggest concerns about bags like this are when they don’t have the stuffing in them. I wonder if they still keep their shape.

Reply Aug 9, 2010 1:04PM 5 Jen

My first designer bag was a Chloe, and it’s still my all-time favorite go-to bag. For the price, I don’t think the quality of leather, hardware and style can be beat. This bag is another example of a great Chloe bag, and I may just may have to purchase it!

RHNJ: “I couldn’t tell if the boat was swaying or if it was my head.”

As has become traditional, the show started at Teresa’s conference center/house, but unfortunately, it was not to do cute family stuff. This time it was to mention the car accident (DUI? DUI.) that Joe had recently been in. Joe claimed that yawning caused him to hit a bunch of trees and flip his car, but whatever happened, at least no one was hurt, considering the rather gruesome accident photos. Joe also insists that alcohol became an issue in the arrest because he drank some scotch after the accident. Because he had wrecked in front of a friend’s house, and it seemed like a good time for cocktails. Right. I don’t think that’s true, but, well, if it is…he’s the dumbest person on the face of the planet. No contest. Give him the crown. Or the dunce cap. Whatever. Give him some kind of hat for dumb people.

Simultaneously Danielle and Danny The Ex-Con (Who has an iPhone. I didn’t see that coming.) had gotten together to discuss the accident and feign concern over Joe’s health. Once Danielle was done with that little charade, she called Joe disgusting and made fun of his Maserati. Love and light! And, oh yeah, she’d like to remind us all that she was richer than god back when she was married. In case we doubted or forgot. For better or for worse, this was the last of Danielle for the evening (and it was kind of for worse – this episode was tragically boring.)

Loewe does the anti-It Bag. Are we buying it?

Reply Aug 11, 2010 10:22AM 10 reneeo

I have numerous Loewe bags from over the years. I was just in Spain and bought another. Their quality and workmanship is unbelievable. Once you own one, you will want more. They are very classic and not showy which is why I like them. The Amazona is completely lined in soft beautiful leather (for only you to enjoy!) However, they do come out with some fun glam bags too. The only store in the U.S. is in Hawaii (where I live) so that is another reason they are not widespread. I don’t know if any department stores carry them ??? (Where else can you buy them besides online?) I think the paper bag is nice if I had that kind of money to throw around (but I don’t). I think we are going to start seeing more people using these bags.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 11:23AM 11 Amanda Mull

According to their website, Bergdorfs and a few speciality shops in the US carry them. I’ve seen them at Jeffrey in Atlanta in the past, but haven’t noticed any recently. They may have stopped ordering them, although Jeffrey in New York is still listed as carrying them on their website.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 12:19PM 12 mochababe73

I’d rather purchase the new Marc Jacobs Paradise Rio bag.
I cannot be seen wearing a handbag that looks like it came from my neighborhood grocery store. Besides, I don’t even think that you can get it over the shoulder.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 11:52AM 13 19yearslater

I think that the statement it’s trying to make about consumerism is hypocritical with such a high price.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 12:46PM 14 Amanda Mull

That makes two of us. The relevancy of bags like this is completely lost on me if the designers, who seem to think they’re very clever, keep charging four-figure prices. The Proenza version is the only one I’d consider buying, and also the only one that doesn’t seem to want to make a philosophical statement. Also: it’s the cheapest.

An It Bag is still an It Bag, even in a grocery bag’s clothing.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 1:03PM 15 Linda

Perfectly stated!

Reply Aug 12, 2010 1:09PM 16 frannita

I find the Amazona beautiful but man, it’s so pricey. I’ll have to wait until I go to Spain (not in the near future either) to get it, it will be cheaper with the tax back!

Rachel Zoe Project: “How do you pose without a train? I mean, it’s tricky.”

Of course things kicked off with a shopping trip to Fred Segal, but Rachel wasn’t feeling was shopportunistic as usual because of the drama of the impending Golden Globes. That doesn’t mean shopping didn’t happen, though – of course it did. Rachel eventually managed to get out of her unreasonably plush bathrobe (does she live in a hotel?) and turned up to find new looks for a “new beginning” with Brad, who she thinks needs to butch things up a little bit. I disagree – I love how delightfully un-butch Brad is, what with his bow ties and retro glasses. It works for him. For her part, Rachel considered getting a bob for about a second and a half, but rightfully concluded that that wouldn’t be a great idea.

Lest we forget, though, it’s Golden Globes time! Starlets need dresses like a crackhead needs a hit! Brad and Jordan got together to pull some options and drop some names, which his half the point of this show (the other half, of course, is sheer and unabated sartorial lust.) Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Garner were all going to need pretty sparklies for the big day, as well as possibly Paula Patton.

Balenciaga showcases animal print for their 10th Anniversary

Reply Aug 11, 2010 4:43PM 4 gpc

Megs, I received NM’s “The Book” for September 2010 and on page 198 they are featuring the perforated lambskin “Arena Cross Maxi Twiggy” in royal blue with brass hardware. I guess it also comes in gray, taupe, rose or light blue. It is actually very nice, but not sure if there will be other styles in the perforated leather. If you want to see it online, go to NM’s site, catalog shopping and enter catalog code SEP10 and item no. is 198a.

Reply Aug 11, 2010 5:20PM 5 mochababe73

I have been a lover of animal print since it was considered tacky to wear. I wore it with pride. However, I don’t like this particular print. I am going to have to go to the Galleria here in Houston and check it out.

Even though I’m not a huge fan of animal print – it’s hard to find an animal-printed purse that doesn’t look a bit cheap – I loved this bag from the moment I saw it!!!! BREATH-TAKING!!!

Wow. I really like Coach as they have a bag for everyone and are an affordable second tier brand. They are well made and last forever. Not everyone can afford to buy a Balenciaga. Coach has been around for years, and there’s a reason. Cheap, tacky handbag designers don’t last long.
I love the bags. I would never pay that much for a Coach. If I had the money, my $1400 would be spent on a first tier handbag designer.
It seems that there are a whole lot of bag snobs here that love bashing Coach. For the record, I am not tacky or cheap. I’m just a teacher who likes to look good and can’t afford to spend $1400 on a bag. Nor do I want to do so. If there were no brands like Coach, Dooney, Michael Michael Kors, or Marc by Marc Jacobs, I would be reduced to wearing truly cheap, tacky bags like Kathy Van Zeeland, Ed Hardy, and Guess. Now, for me, those are in the category of cheap and tacky.

$1400 for that hideously printed monstrosity? What is that faux diamond piece of crap hanging off the really ugly flat handle (the Sabrina’s rolled handle is much nicer)? There are so many things wrong with this . . . If Coach wants to play with the big boys, then it needs to revamp its style aesthetic and quality standards, pronto.

I completely agree with mochababe73. If Coach were as tacky and cheap as some posters would have us believe, there’s no way it would have the mass appeal that is has. Coach knows their market well and I’ve been impressed with their marked transition from logo-bomb, smallish bags to bags featuring more hardware and styling details in recent years. I bought a patent leather graphite Maggie bag of theirs last year and I’ve found it to be just as sturdy, functional and enjoyable as my LV Batignolles and my Dior Cannage drawstring — arguably it is MORE functional than the Dior, which was indeed a $1400 bag.

I understand that some people resent Coach’s “accessibility” factor (you can get many coach items for <$50, particularly at an outlet store), but the hard truth is, "affordability" and "high fashion/quality" are NOT mutually exclusive. Frankly, of the three bags I mentioned above, the LV Batignolles is the one that I see EVERYONE else carrying, so in my case my Coach bag is "more exclusive!"

P.S. All that being said, I do believe that $1400 is probably too high a price point for Coach to aspire to, particularly when they’re offering essentially the same concept for under $300 at the same time. Expect to see those Brynnes all up in the outlets/Nordstrom sale bins in a few months.

Wow! (And not in a good way.)

When I was younger (and I am not about to say how long ago this was) if you had done really well you got a Coach bag from the parents when you graduated from high school. I remember how beautiful we thought the leather was and how much you did not want to be the girl in the family whose grades were not good enough to get The Bag. I still have mine.

For me, though, the brand has lost a lot of its luster since then. I don’t think I’d buy a Coach bag, today. They don’t seem special enough, anymore, and the bags shown here are, IMO, a good reason as to why. I think they both look cheap (and I am a big animal print fan) and I certaily would not pay $1,400 for the calf hair. Like you, Amanda, if I had that kind of money to spend on a bag (and that is also out of the question for me in this economy) I would go straight to Balenciaga, or, I would spend less and get the DVF metallic Stephanie.
YMMV, of course.

I also agree with mochababe73. I don’t think Coach is neither tacky, nor cheap! Not all of us can spend huge amounts of money on perses, but we all want to look nice and beautifully dressed every-day! So why can we not have the chance? It’s like suggesting that if you can afford a bag that costs more than 1000$, you will never get the chance to look nicely dressed!!! Coach IS recognisable in Europe as well and happens to be a really nice brand where I live.
As far as these two bags are concerned, I like both!!!

P.S I’ve just noticed that faux diamond or whatever hanging from the black bag’s handles, so I’d say I mostly prefer the brown one!

I wanted to add that I am most definitely not saying that one has to spend 1K or more in order to have a nice bag. The recession has given my business a thorough beating and I would never spend that kind of money on a handbag right now.
I have seen many nice bags that cost much less than a thousand dollars. I’m not a fan of Coach these days, but I certainly don’t have anything against those who still like, and carry, Coach bags. To each her own. We’re talking purses, not foreign policy here, after all.

RHDC: “I have a patent on the ‘penile volumetric measuring device.’”

Last week, your reviews of The Real Housewives of DC were decidedly mixed, but after last night’s episode I’m not afraid to admit that I love it. Yes, “love” is the appropriate word here. Something about the contrast of proximity to power and total idiocy is just delicious, particularly when compared to the eternal trainwreck that is Real Housewives of New Jersey.

Compared to the ladies of Jersey, our DC women might as well be philosophers. Well, maybe not Michaele, but I’m not entirely convinced that Michaele knows where she is at any given time, so she might as well be a Jersey housewife. And Cat. Is it too late to deport her? But as always, if we didn’t have those two, I wouldn’t have a recap to write, so in a weird way I owe both Michaele and Cat a solid.

We started with Michaele. Of course. It was Michaele’s 44th birthday, and at the very least I’ll admit that she doesn’t look 44. I would have pegged her at about 39, so good for her. Tareq brought in an array of random Jimmy Choo stuff from which she could pick her birthday present, which seemed like the least thoughtful, laziest way to go birthday shopping for a gift ever. Then Tareq took her outside and, uh, there was a horse. Michaele doesn’t ride, but it doesn’t matter, because she still thinks like a five-year-old and ALL five-year-old girls love horses. She named it Sparkle. Really.

Even Paul, the Dwight of DC, thought the name was almost stupefyingly immature but he managed to keep a straight face (well, mostly) when she told him. He seems to know that Michaele is either a moron, a pathological liar or both, but either because he’s a very nice person or the producers put him up to it, he agreed to let Michaele throw him a birthday party later in the episode.

Out in Virginia, Mary was giving instructions to her maid in Spanish about pee on the carpet and dog-hair tumbleweeds. The big fuzzy dog belongs to her grown daughter, who apparently broke up with her live-in boyfriend, spent all her money, and is now living at home again. Personally, I was just kind of shocked that any Real Housewife knows even a few words of a foreign language.

After dealing with the dog hair issues, Mary got together with Cat at a coffee shop (A coffee shop at which Mary’s daughter works! Hooray Mary for making her broke behind get a job!) to discuss Michaele, since Michaele appears to be the only thing that anyone on this show ever discusses. Cat said that she intended to honor last week’s commitment to go horseback riding with Michaele even though Michaele can’t ride a horse, and when she asked Mary if she’d come along too, Mary pretended like she didn’t even hear the question. Between that, how drunk she got at fancy her birthday party and the biometric lock on her closet, I think I might really like Mary. Even if she is a Kennedy name-dropper.

Cat, on the other hand…well, she has daughters who are in elementary school and she says she can’t wait for them to go to college, which must be a truly fantastic attitude for a mother to have when her kids are, like, eight. She followed that fabulous display of warmth and maturity up by being rude to Mary’s daughter and complaining when Mary tipped her too much at the end of the meal. Cat is just a ball of sunshine, and by sunshine, I mean negativity and condescension. That would be irritating enough by itself, but on top of it, she doesn’t seem all that clever or quick. In contrast, Bethenny from Real Housewives of New York also tends toward negativity and condescension, but she does it in a way that’s witty and oddly charming. Cat is just flat and patronizing, which means I award her no points. Try harder next week, Cat.

It wasn’t long before she and Mary traipsed out to the country to pretend to ride horses with Michaele, who was dressed in full riding regalia despite asking the other girls to come in jeans. Her husband managed to mention Prince Charles before Mary even had her boots on, which filled the Salahi name-drop quota for the first half of the episode and signaled to everyone that it was time to get on the horses. In a further attempt to give credence to my cocaine suspicions from last week, Michaele completely ignored all the polo instructions and rode directly away from the group, polo mallet in the air, screaming in delight the entire time.

After they rounded up Michaele, who had wandered off into the woods on her horse and was attempting to converse with a tree, everyone dismounted and Tareq managed to do the only redeeming thing he’s ever done by pissing off Cat. How did he piss her off? He gave her free alcohol, that bastard. It wasn’t the right kind of alcohol, you see, it was beer. You can’t expect her to drink BEER. How common. He told her it was chardonnay at first as a very obvious unfunny joke, and apparently she didn’t realize from the fact that it was dark and had foam on the top that it probably wasn’t grape-derived. Also, I think it probably smelled like beer, and beer and wine don’t smell the same. But how would someone as lovely and refined as Cat know what BEER smells like?

Refreshingly, it was time for Stacie. She was supposed to have friends over (and by “friends,” I mean Housewives) for dinner on Sunday, but since she didn’t have time to cook she decided it would be fun to have her friends over to her Aunt’s house for a traditional family dinner. Surely, Cat wouldn’t make a racist fool of herself at all…of course not…

Her Aunt Frances seemed like a total gem, and Lynda at least was very excited to go over to her house to have real southern food. I had no idea that she was from Georgia, but now that I know, I like her by default. Things I also like: peach cobbler. Fried chicken. Everything on the table for dinner. I could practically smell it through the television, and this may have been the only Real Housewives party to which I would have gladly gone.

Sadly, Cat arrived first and felt completely awkward around…well, around the people who were there. Take that as you will (“Cat is unable to interact with black people” is how I took it). She also wasn’t pleased with the drink options presented to her, but Aunt Frances seemed to be enjoying her scotch just fine, and somehow I think Aunt Frances has better taste than Cat does.

When Mary and her husband arrived, things became a little less awkward upstairs and Rich, Ebong and Jason retired to the basement to discuss their penises. Well, not theirs, I guess, but the fact that Jason holds the patent to an invention that can measure body parts by volume, and of course the first and best thing to measure with that is dicks. Naturally. It’s called the “penile volumetric measuring device,” and mentioning the name made the white guy in the room very, very uncomfortable. It also made Ebong uncomfortable simply because he’s a gentleman, although he said we’d have to defer to Lynda for more information on his, uh, situation.

Thankfully they all shut up about the penis measurer and got down to eating, and as if on cue, Cat became totally disgusted by the way that southern food is prepared (yes, yankees, traditional methods reuse old cooking grease). She managed to excuse herself as soon as her plate was cleared and run out of there, presumably to eat a salad with the dressing on the side in order to feel like herself again. As a southerner from a southern family, I can tell you that Cat clearly doesn’t know what she’s missing. The party at Aunt Frances’s house looked like every Thanksgiving I ever had as a kid, except the cobbler looked better. I need to move on from this subject before I drool on my laptop.

After Cat made her escape (before dessert!), Stacie got together with part of her family and Paul to apologize for Cat’s abrupt exit and talk a little smack, which she was certainly justified in doing. I’m not sure if it was the preponderance of black people or simply the unfamiliar food that made her uncomfortable, but I think you’d have to be seriously freaked out to be so blatantly rude. Whether the problem was based on race or class, Cat is very clearly not used to being around people that aren’t exactly like her. It’s kind of astounding that she can’t figure out that when you’re on television, you should at least pretend.

On a different night, at a different party, everyone was getting ready to celebrate Paul’s birthday. Paul was expecting to meet up with Michaele to get ready for the party but she was nowhere to be found and not answering her Blackberry, and she also hadn’t showed up by the time that guests were arriving. Reminder: she had volunteered to plan and host the entire party. When Michaele and Tareq finally arrived, they were in an eternally out-of-style white limo with a police escort and barely beat Paul to the party. Decent people would have given some sort of sincere apology, but Michaele and Tareq are clearly not decent people by any definition.

During the dinner portion of the evening, Lynda and Cat’s husband were seated next to each other and they actually managed to have a far more intelligent conversation about his work than Cat had conducted last week at Stacie’s house. He explained working with two very different presidents in a diplomatic and thoughtful way, and even though we only saw a snippet of the conversation, it was easily the most intelligent exchange I’ve seen on Real Housewives in, uh, forever. No wonder he’s divorcing Cat.

In stark contrast to the erudition on display at the dinner table, Michaele and Tareq got up and made some noise in order to play another round of “Look at Me, Look at Me,” which is clearly the couple’s favorite game ever. Despite the fact that they hadn’t bothered to actually play host or show up on time to the party, they didn’t think twice about taking the spotlight away from the birthday boy by opening a bottle of champagne with a sword. Yes, the brought a sword in anticipation of this moment. Tareq launched a spray of champagne and broken glass directly at Lynda, who I hope wasn’t wearing anything that required dry cleaning.

When Paul was allowed to speak for himself, the things he said about growing up awkward and insecure and turning his life into something great were actually really sweet and a nice birthday message. He thanked everyone profusely and teared up a little bit, and I found myself again thinking that I wouldn’t mind being at that party. Twice in one episode. Kind of amazing.

Well, almost. After everyone ate and the party was winding down, Lynda made a rather snarky comment about Michaele’s winery (which, admittedly, is probably awful). I was ok with that since Michaele is perhaps the most cluelessly narcissistic person on television and has offered herself up for criticism, but then Lynda made some even worse comments about Michaele’s weight. I’m a big believer in the idea that you don’t really need to comment on anyone’s weight, ever, and the sort of faux concern that she was showing based on Michaele’s “health” is doubly annoying.

Hey, Lynda. Telling someone that she needs to be force-fed a cheeseburger is not concern, it’s a Mean Girl tactic to make someone feel beneath you because of her appearance. About 700 words ago, I said that I liked you. Don’t make me take it back. Although if you called her a crackhead instead, I would find that totally acceptable. That might not make any sense, but I stand by it.

Apologies in advance for the lack of pictures – Bravo has completely forgotten to put the stills from last night’s show up on their website, but if their web guy recovers from his hangover sometime today and remembers, I’ll add them.

Ok I love that the DC housewives have more “mature” fights and drama. This show is a snoozer at best. Give me the cat fights of New Jersey. What is wrong with flipping a table for no reason? Can’t a girl take off running for no apparent reason while screaming she is going to kill me when there are five hundred (I am exaggerating Poshe does not have that many customers) witnesses in the room? The DC girls are nice but we need some good drama and more over the top flashy clothes (ex. Teresa) to keep watching for a whole season.

It was a little better yesterday, but not by much. Since I will be moving to the area in less than a year, I am not too pumped. If this is the way women behave in the DC metroplex, I am going to be a fish out of water. This type of behavior from some of these women are unacceptable, and I have a REAL hard time holding my tongue.
I didn’t like what Stacie did at all. I’m glad that everyone had a good time. Stacie asked her friends to go to her Aunt’s house because she didn’t feel like being bothered by cooking and entertaining. That, for me, is wrong. However, Stacie I can tolerate.
Not a fan of Cat. She needs to pack up and get on the first plane back to London. I put her husband in the same category as Kelly Bensimon and Danielle Staub. Stop what you’re doing and get your children before their mothers ruin them. Funny how Cat’s husband and Kelly’s ex-husband are photographers.
As a black woman, I don’t find that Cat’s behavior was racist. I think that the woman is just ill-mannered and snobbish. She thinks that she’s above everyone. Like we say in the South, that woman has no home training.
Mary is okay. I find her to be quite forgettable.
Lynda is a b
